Shuttleworth Collection Autumn Airshow - Old Warden, Bedfordshire, 5th October 2014

Comment -
The Shuttleworth Collection Race Day Airshow was a wonderful way to round out the 2014 display season.  With Duxford’s traditional autumn show scrubbed it was also the only major show benefiting from the fine weather and more relaxed atmosphere traditionally found during the October events.

The ‘Race Day’ theme was well covered with two Cape record holders (Percival Mew Gull G-AEXF and a Vans RV7), aircraft representing types that took part in the 1934 McRobertson ‘England to Australia air race’ including the actual winner of the event, DH88 Comet ‘Grovesnor House,’ a F1 demonstration, including Cosmic Wind G-ARUL, and aircraft that performed in the historic Lympne trials held in the mid 1920s, namely the ANEC, Hawker Cygnet and English Electric Wren.  To round out the theme there was also a mock air race which saw no less than 9 types take to the skies.

If this wasn’t enough the show also included heavy metal in the shape of North Weald based Hunter T7 WV372 in the hands of Chris Heames, P-51D Mustang ‘Jumpin Jacques’ from the Hangar 11 Collection displayed by Peter Teichman, and resident Sea Hurricane, Gladiator and Lysander making a formation pass before undertaking individual displays.

For me the highlight had to be the immaculate DH88 Comet which the Collection has been working on for many years to make safer to operate and which had made its first post-restoration flight and display earlier in the season at Old Warden.  Seeing this machine scything through the sky was one of the magic moments of the 2014 season.
