Comment - my only other visit to the RAF Museum, London was probably around 1990 when I went with a school friend whose brother was a test pilot at Boscombe Down and who went on to join the RAF to work in intelligence! So much has changed since then and it was a pleasure to get back there with my two sons on a hot summers day in the year of the RAF’s 100th birthday.

Being the RAF’s premier museum there are many rare types on display, some being the only examples that you can see in the UK and indeed Europe. While the emphasis is obviously on home grown talent, the site houses a collection of ex-Luftwaffe machines, including a twin-seat Fw190A-8/U1, a Ju87G Stuka, a He162 ‘Volksjager’ and a nightfighter Bf110G-2. Seeing these aircraft in the flesh will always bring a shiver to the spine, even in the relatively static museum environment.

Personal favourites for me are the two examples of the ultimate Hawker piston line, namely a Bristol Centaurus powered Tempest MkII and a Napier Sabre powered Tempest MkV. After reading about, and seeing old photographs of, these absolute beasts of an aircraft for so long, to see them in the flesh brought on what authors would call a powerful emotional experience, hence the rather extensive set of images that I took of them! Another first was to actually see a complete Bristol Beaufighter, the museum holding TF.X RD253.

The reality of the post-Cold War world is brought home in Hangar 6 where examples of types that have been in fairly constant operational use since the first Gulf War in 1990/91 can be seen, including a ‘desert-pink’ Buccaneer S.2B, Harrier GR9A and a SEPECAT Jaguar GR1. The inclusion of an MQ-1B Predator UAV is a nod to the possible future of air power, although it is quite eye-opening to realise that this technology has been around for long enough for examples to find their way into a museum.

In summary, the RAF Museum London has a huge amount to offer across the full spectrum of RAF aircraft and beyond. In addition, there are lots of interactive and hands on exhibits, the museum able to please the hardened enthusiast, just happy to be able to walk under the wings of a Short Sunderland flying boat, while keeping the kids happy and engaged too.
