Comment - Brooklands was involved in the birth of aviation from the beginning and pioneers A.V.Roe, Tommy Sopwith, Louis Bleriot, Harry Hawker and Barnes Wallis were all active at the site. In World War Two Hurricane fighters and Wellington bombers rolled off the production lines while post war the Vickers Varsity, Valiant, Viscount, VC-10 and BAC One-Eleven were built and flown from there, while more of Concorde was built at Brooklands than at any other manufacturing site underlining the sites historical significance.

It is therefore fitting that a museum is live and active on the site, one which celebrates all things related to the sites rich history and also one which is very much geared to inspiring the younger generation’s interest in aviation with many hands-on, interactive and tech-led displays.

Early 2019 had seen the arrival of two significant airframes with Hawker connections, the first being Hawk Mk50 G-HAWK/ZA101 and the second, immaculately restored Harrier GR1 XV741, which is part of the ‘First to the Fastest’ exhibition celebrating two Transatlantic air races.

I had visited a month previously to interview the team who had just finished the static phase of the restoration of Hurricane MkIIA  Z2389 and returned this time with my two offspring (who loved the hands-on stuff) to have a more leisurely look around at the new Brooklands Aircraft Factory and Flight Shed which have been significant projects for the museum and look excellent. It was great to finally get a chance to have a good look at Vickers Wellington IA N2980, a poignant and fascinating exhibit and one which I had not seen since 2007 as it was hidden away during the renovations when I revisited for the first time in 10 years in 2017.

Another very well done exhibit is Concorde G-BBDG which you can visit (via small additional charge) through the Concorde experience. This involves a talk and tour both inside and outside the aircraft with a few extra special effects in the cabin which really do bring the aircraft alive.

In summary, Brooklands is a very good museum with high quality exhibits that very much cater to all the family.
