Comment – The 2017 Festival of Flight was an absolute classic with the modern military participation from the Armee de l’Air, Belgian Air Component and Czech Air Force, alongside front line RAF types, stealing the limelight from the attending warbirds. The 2018 event was a return to the more traditional line up with the only real jet-powered performance being an, as usual, excellent display from the RAF’s Red Arrows, coupled with some varied lighting and cloud conditions that made for some interesting conditions for photography.

The main theme of the event was the 100th anniversary of the Royal Air Force which was celebrated in the air by a Battle of Britain salute commemorating 18th August 1940, later to be known as the ‘Hardest Day,’ when the Luftwaffe targeted three massive air assaults against southern England and lost 100 aircraft against the RAF’s 36. Playing the part of the Luftwaffe was Hispano HA1112 Buchon ‘Yellow 7’ flown by Richard Grace and operated by Anglia Aircraft Restorations. The Spanish-built, Merlin-powered ‘Bf109’ tangled with a pair of Hurricanes before taking on the scrambled Spitfires eventually being seen off by a force that included Peter Teichman in the Hangar 11 Collection’s PRXI PL965, The Old Flying Machine Company’s MkIXB MH434 flown by Steve Jones, and Dan Griffith in Spitfire XVI TB885.

Personal highlight and main draw for me was a chance to finally see Anglia Restoration’s Hawker Sea Fury FB11 G-CBEL marked up as Sea Fury prototype SR661. In terms of sheer brute strength, intimidating looks and ultimate piston power, the Typhoon/Tempest/Fury line wins hands down and, for me, are the most evocative examples of this technology which, by then, was almost at its limits. Richard Grace’s display in the machine did not disappoint and I look forward to the time when perhaps we will see a Tempest II and Typhoon in the air again as well.

Another classic warbird, and one with a long association with Biggin Hill, is of course Boeing B-17G Flying Fortress ‘Sally-B.’ It is always a pleasure to see this machine display, a testament to the sheer willpower of Elly Sallingboe and the Sally-B team. As usual, a plea from me to join the Sally-B supporters club if you have not already as this really does make a difference to keeping this flying memorial where she belongs. The team have had so many setbacks and hurdles to manage over the years, all without any official funding or support, and it is a real and humbling tribute to Sally-B still in the air and still commemorating all those US servicemen who gave their lives flying from England in World War Two.
